"Be ye ever so high, still the law is above you." - Thomas Fuller
I very much like and appreciate this quote. Personally, I like the idea of rules and regulations and that there is always some sort of organized law to follow. The idea of a brutish society or ruling by divine will (unless, of course there is a divine will out there seeking just people to rule) just seems wrong to me. One of the great things of the human race is our ability to organize and structure our lives (although I feel a little bit of a loss of that right now). This lack of organization and structure is where civilizations begin to fall apart.
After reading the Kohli-Khandekar book about the Indian television industry, this idea becomes very real. Their lack of regulations and control have caused the industry to almost go into chaos. Nobody even has time to stop and think of regulations because they are too busy trying to keep their businesses afloat.
This was a similar effect in the US radio industry before it was regulated, and again when it became deregulated. Anybody could say anything, use the air space for whatever they liked, etc. It could be dangerous, harmful, or detrimental to those listening or flipping stations unaware of what they might come across.
The only problem with the idea of a law-governed society is the maintenance of keeping laws fair and just, compatible with the times, and updated for new innovations. Also, the cooperation of other nations' laws or lack of, and how to deal with them - although there would probably be laws for that if we are thorough enough.
